I'm the ward activities chairman (with NO committee!!! ahhhhh.) and I'm in the middle of planning this FUN Pioneer Day BBQ. I got the idea form Sugardoodle.com and tweaked it a little for our ward. I need any great ideas you have......my brain is fried! I need to think of pioneer related things that each group will earn after their "trial" along their journey on the trail.
OK this makes NO sense to you.

Ward Pioneer Day Activity
We start by dividing the ward into groups and giving each group a wheelbarrow (this is their covered wagon). Then they have stations (trials) they have to visit to collect items they would need for their journey.
At one station, for instance, they would have to "shoot" their food. Two men who will dressed up with antler or bunny headbands and run around in a set area. The groups will have sling shots and will try to hit their food (the men..haa haa!) with a marshmallow they will have three tries to hit one. Depending on how they scored, they receive a set amount of jerky for their journey.
At another station, they have to answer questions about our local stake - how many congregations are there, how many high councilors are there, etc. - and depending on how well they do, they receive bags of trail mix.
At another station, they have to erect a huge old fashioned army tent, it should take a lot of teamwork - after they had done that, they get a sleeping bag to put in their wheelbarrow.
They go around earning all of these different items for their journey - including bobbing for apples and constructing a mini covered wagon.
( I don't know what Pioneer related item I should give them to put in their wagon for the last two journeys: bobbing for apples, and making a pioneer wagon out of food......????)
various things will be happening to each group - like all of the guys in the group might have to go off to the Mormon Battalion (not be able to help at that station), or Indians might come and kidnap one or two members of your group (when that happens, the whole group has to go to the Indian campground and trade items from their wheelbarrow to get their people back - they have to to decide what they could most do without!), or mobbers (aka the Bishopric) with cap guns might run up, tip over their wheelbarrow, scatter their items, and disrupt their journey. Also guys with Super Soakers who represent river crossings or sudden rainstorms, which would halt their journey. The whole idea was to make it through all of the stations with enough items in your barrow to complete the journey they have to see if they have enough there at the end to make it through, or if they got stranded on the trail.
Each group also will have someone come by with "injury" cards - a blind person in their group (bandanna tied around the eyes), a broken leg (placed in the wheelbarrow and helped), etc. They have to stay together, help each other and finish as a group.
It might be total chaos but also lots of fun!

Soo any ideas for what the groups could earn (such as the Jerky, trail mix, and sleeping bag) for the last two trials (bobbing for apples and making a Pioneer wagon out of food) of their journey along the trail.
I'm blank.

Just a thought...I am sure pioneers would have needed some basic tools, hammer, shovel etc. They could earn on of these after making the wagon from food. They also would have needed some clothes, maybe they could earn a piece of fabric. Sounds like fun!!!!
That sounds like a lot of fun. I just got back from doing a pioneer trek with the youth in my stake. I think the basic tools is a great idea as well as maybe some TP.
ohhh good ideas girls!
Keep it coming.
Thank goodness for blogs!
Hmm- you are too creative--
What about medicine?? Or bandages or something??
Or what about guns?? They need guns to fight the indians - I think ?? I'd want a gun?
Red fishes for when they go fishing and cach a fish - just an idea
I haven't congratulated you on your half! Way to go! I had so much fun doing the prison break with you last year, I am for sure doing it again. I couldn't find any this summer that fit my schedule, so I did a couple 5 and 6 mile races, which I totally loved! Anyway! Good luck with your Pioneer day celebration! Let me know if you are thinking about doing Prison Break... YOu totally rock! ... I was bummed that I didn't get to see you over the fourth, we were doing Jamba stuff up in Salmon... anyway... see ya! Jules
Hey Chy,
We are in Southern Oregon, about a half hour from the CA border. Your little boys are super cute. How do you find time to do all your running! Wow!
The ward activity was super fun. So creative! There was a great turn-out and some pretty good sports. My "favorite" part was getting shot in the butt with a marshmallow rocketing from a slingshot. The really funny part was that a "deer" shot me . . . ah, the tides had turned. Great party!!
